Te Whare Tapawhā Wellbeing

Read the scenario and use the four pou (pillars) of Te Whare Tapawhā to explore what can support wellbeing. There can be more than one helpful way to respond. You do not need to share private experiences.

Meet the four pou

Te Whare Tapawhā is a model of wellbeing developed by Māori health leader Sir Mason Durie. Its four dimensions are connected: taha tinana (physical wellbeing), taha hinengaro (mental and emotional wellbeing), taha wairua (spiritual wellbeing, including values and meaning) and taha whānau (family and social wellbeing). People may understand and practise these dimensions in different ways.

1.Write the correct English meaning beside each dimension.
  • Taha tinana
  • Taha hinengaro
  • Taha wairua
  • Taha whānau
  • Family and social wellbeing
  • Spiritual wellbeing, including values and meaning
  • Physical wellbeing
  • Mental and emotional wellbeing
2.Why does the whare model show all four dimensions as important?
  • Because one dimension can affect the others, and wellbeing includes the whole person.
  • Because everyone must feel exactly the same way each day.
  • Because only physical health matters.
  • Because the four dimensions should never change.

A busy week for Maia

Maia has a football tournament on Saturday and a science presentation due on Monday. She has been staying up late to practise and feels tired. Her friend offered to help her rehearse, and her aunt invited her for a walk by the beach. Maia also enjoys taking a quiet moment to remember her koro, who taught her to care for the sea. She is unsure how to fit everything in.

3.Name one detail from the scenario that could support each dimension: taha tinana, taha hinengaro, taha wairua and taha whānau. A detail may support more than one dimension.
4.Maia has been staying up late and feels tired. Which dimension is most directly affected, and what is one possible effect on another dimension?
5.Which plan best supports Maia’s wellbeing while recognising that she has several commitments?
  • Stay up later every night so she can do everything.
  • Make a realistic plan that includes sleep, preparation and time to connect with supportive people.
  • Give up everything she enjoys and manage alone.
  • Ignore how tired she feels until the tournament is over.
6.Explain one way that getting enough sleep could support Maia in another part of her week.
7.For each choice, name the dimension it most directly supports. Some choices could support more than one: taking a walk; asking a friend to rehearse; making quiet time to remember someone important; sharing a meal with family.
8.Suggest one realistic action Maia could take for each dimension before Monday. Make the actions fit her busy week.
9.Imagine Maia tells you she feels overwhelmed. Write one kind thing you could say and one trusted person or support she could consider talking to.
Draw a whare with four strong pou. Label each pou with one dimension of Te Whare Tapawhā. Add one small symbol or example beside each label to show something that can support that dimension.
