Second grade is the consolidation year. The phonics that was taught in first grade becomes fluent reading; addition and subtraction become automatic and stretch to three digits; sentences become paragraphs. It is the least dramatic year of elementary and one of the most important, because a child who leaves second grade fluent and confident coasts into the content-heavy years.

Reading
- Finishes the phonics code: advanced vowel teams, r-controlled vowels, soft c and g, multisyllable words
- Reads early chapter books independently with fluency and expression
- Answers who, what, where, why questions and retells with beginning, middle and end
- Reads for 20 minutes a day alone and listens to longer read-alouds
Math
- Place value to 1,000; adds and subtracts within 1,000 with regrouping
- Addition and subtraction facts within 20 fully automatic
- Skip counts by 2s, 5s, 10s, 100s; foundations of multiplication through arrays and equal groups
- Money, time to five minutes, measurement in standard units, bar graphs, simple fractions
Writing, spelling, grammar
- Writes a paragraph of four or five sentences on one topic
- Spells common patterns correctly; begins a rules-based spelling program
- Nouns, verbs, adjectives; capital letters, end punctuation, commas in lists
- Copywork daily; cursive may begin late in the year
Science
- Life cycles, habitats, plants and animals; matter and its properties; simple forces; earth materials
- Runs simple experiments with a prediction and a drawing of the result
Social studies
- Continues the chronological story (Middle Ages if using a four-year cycle) with maps and projects
- Community, government basics, map skills: continents, oceans, compass directions

What should a 2nd grader learn in homeschool?
Fluent reading and the end of the phonics code, addition and subtraction to 1,000 with regrouping and automatic facts, a paragraph of writing with basic grammar and spelling, plus science, history, geography and art through books and hands-on work.
How long is a 2nd grade homeschool day?
Two to three hours of formal work with breaks, plus read-alouds and 20 minutes of independent reading. Afternoons are free.
What is the best 2nd grade homeschool curriculum?
Most families combine a mastery math program (Math Mammoth, Singapore or Math-U-See), a spelling program (All About Spelling), a gentle writing program (Writing With Ease or Brave Writer) and books for everything else. The Good and the Beautiful and Blossom and Root bundle the language arts.
When should I start cursive?
Late second grade or early third, once print is fluent. Ten minutes a day for a year makes it the child's default hand.
My second grader still reverses b and d. Is that normal?
Yes until about age seven or eight. Consistent reversals past eight alongside slow reading are worth an assessment; on their own they are usually just immaturity.
