Fifth grade closes elementary school. The child should finish the year with arithmetic complete (fractions, decimals and all four operations), writing that is organised and revised, reading that is genuinely independent, and enough study habits to handle the bigger workload of middle school. - Matter and chemical reactions, ecosystems and food webs, Earth's systems and the water cycle, space, the human body
- Longer investigations with a written lab report
History and geography
- US history from exploration to the present in a story-based pass, or the start of the second world-history cycle
- US and world geography with physical and political maps; latitude, longitude, time zones

How many hours is 5th grade homeschool?
Three and a half to four and a half hours, about half of it independent. Formal work is usually done by lunch with afternoons for projects and activities.
Is my 5th grader ready for pre-algebra?
If fractions, decimals, percents and long division are fluent and they solve multi-step word problems, yes. If not, a solid grade 6 arithmetic year first is better than an early, shaky pre-algebra.
