Understanding My Well-Being

Wellbeing includes physical health, thoughts and feelings, relationships, and feeling connected. There are no perfect answers. You may write about a fictional person instead of yourself, and you can skip any personal question. If something feels difficult or unsafe, consider talking with a trusted adult.

At the theme park

Nikau, Hemi and Zoe are spending a day at a busy theme park. Nikau is excited about the rides but feels nervous in the queue. Hemi has had little sleep and is getting irritated by the noise. Zoe notices Hemi is quiet, so she asks if he wants company or a short break. Hemi chooses to sit somewhere calm, drink water and talk. Later, the three friends agree on a meeting point in case anyone gets separated.

1.Which wellbeing areas appear in the scenario? Choose all that apply: physical health, thoughts and feelings, relationships, or connection and safety. Give one detail from the story for each area you choose.
2.Nikau is nervous in the queue. Which response is most supportive?
  • Tell him he is being silly and must get on the ride.
  • Ask what would help, and respect his choice to ride, wait or step away.
  • Push him to the front so the queue moves faster.
  • Ignore him because nervousness is not a real feeling.
3.Hemi chooses a calm break, water and conversation. Explain how each could help, and name one other safe strategy he could try.
4.True or false: Different people can respond differently to the same situation, and both responses can be valid.

Notice, name, choose

Feelings can give clues about what matters or what we need. A feeling is not a problem to be ashamed of; we can choose what to do with it.

5.Match each situation clue with a possible feeling. A clue can have more than one reasonable answer.
  • A friend invites you to join a game
  • You cannot find your group in a crowded place
  • A plan changes without warning
  • Worried or scared
  • Excited or pleased
  • Disappointed or frustrated
6.Zoe notices Hemi is quiet. Write a respectful check-in question she could ask, and one way she can show she is listening.
7.Complete the sentence using a fictional or real everyday example: “I might feel when because .” You may keep the example general.
8.Hemi has a choice of strategies. Sort these into potentially helpful or unhelpful: take a quiet break; tell a trusted person; pretend the feeling does not exist; lash out at a friend.
9.If someone feels overwhelmed or unsafe and their usual strategies are not enough, name two people or services they could approach for support in Aotearoa New Zealand.
10.Make a small wellbeing plan for a busy day out: name one thing to support your body, one strategy for a strong feeling, and one person you could ask for help. You may answer for a fictional person.
