What order should children learn their times tables in?

Start with the tables that have loud patterns: 10s, 2s and 5s (with the 1s alongside). Then use doubling to get the 4s from the 2s and the 8s from the 4s, add the 3s and 6s, and finish with the 9s (finger trick), 11s (repeat the digit), 12s (tens plus doubles) and finally the 7s — which by then are mostly already known from other tables.

What is the Multiplication Tables Check (MTC)?

England's statutory on-screen check taken by all Year 4 pupils each June. It asks 25 questions drawn from the tables up to 12 × 12, with 6 seconds to answer each — so it tests instant recall, not working-out. The 6s, 7s, 8s, 9s and 12s are the most heavily sampled tables, which is exactly where practice time pays off.

Why does times-table fluency matter so much?

Because recall frees up working memory. A child who has to work out 7 × 8 mid-problem has no attention left for the actual maths — fractions, area, long multiplication and algebra all lean on instant fact recall. Research on cognitive load consistently shows that automatic retrieval of basic facts is what lets students handle multi-step problems.

How long should times-table practice sessions be?

Short and frequent beats long and rare: five to ten minutes a day outperforms a weekly hour, because spaced retrieval is what moves facts into long-term memory. Mix formats — say the table aloud, fill in a blank grid, then a timed mixed sheet — so recall works from every direction.
