How to learn the 11 times table

Repeat the digit (up to 9)

11 × 4 = 44, 11 × 7 = 77. For any single digit, the answer is that digit written twice. Children typically learn 11 × 1 through 11 × 9 in a single sitting.

Ten times, plus one more

For 11 × 10, 11 × 11 and 11 × 12, use 11n = 10n + n: 11 × 12 = 120 + 12 = 132. This also explains why the repeat-digit trick works: 11 × 4 = 40 + 4 = 44.

The two-digit magic trick

To multiply a two-digit number by 11, add its digits and put the sum in the middle: 11 × 25 → 2, (2+5), 5 → 275. (If the digits sum past 9, carry: 11 × 57 → 5, 12, 7 → 627.) A great 'wow' extension for confident learners.

Why do 11 times table answers repeat their digits?

Because 11 = 10 + 1, so 11 × n = 10n + n. For a single digit n, that puts n in the tens place and n in the ones place: 11 × 6 = 60 + 6 = 66. The pattern breaks at 11 × 10 once carrying starts.

What are 11 × 11 and 11 × 12?

11 × 11 = 121 and 11 × 12 = 132. These are the two facts children actually have to work at, since the repeat-digit pattern stops at 99. Both fall out of 11n = 10n + n: 110 + 11 and 120 + 12.
