2 × 7 is 7 + 7. Children usually know their doubles from addition work, so frame every fact as a double: 'double 6 is 12, so 2 × 6 = 12'.
The answers end in 2, 4, 6, 8, 0 and repeat: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24. If a child gives an odd answer for the 2s, they know instantly it's wrong — a built-in self-check.
Doubling and halving are inverses. Once 2 × 8 = 16 is secure, ask 'what is half of 16?' — this builds the division facts (16 ÷ 2 = 8) at the same time for free.

Through doubles. Children learn addition doubles (6 + 6, 7 + 7) before multiplication, so 2 × 6 is simply 'double 6'. Skip-counting in 2s — 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 — cements the sequence.
By ages 6–7. In England it is expected by the end of Year 2, along with the 5s and 10s. It is usually the first 'proper' table children commit to memory.
