12 × 7 = (10 × 7) + (2 × 7) = 70 + 14 = 84. Because 12 = 10 + 2, every fact is a ten-fact plus a double — two of the easiest operations children know.
Egg boxes, months in a year, hours on a clock, items sold by the dozen — 12s are everywhere. 'Three egg boxes' making 36 eggs is more memorable than an abstract 12 × 3.
12 × 12 = 144 (a 'gross' — a dozen dozens) is worth knowing cold, along with 12 × 6 = 72, exactly half of it. Landmark facts let children step to neighbours: 12 × 11 is 144 − 12 = 132.

Split 12 into 10 + 2: multiply by ten, multiply by two, add them. 12 × 8 = 80 + 16 = 96. It uses the two easiest tables on the grid and quietly practises the distributive law that column multiplication depends on.
