The units digits cycle 4, 8, 2, 6, 0 — 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, then 24, 28, 32, 36, 40. Spotting that the pattern repeats every five steps helps children predict what comes next.
4 × 5 = 20 and 4 × 10 = 40 are easy anchors. Unknown facts are one hop away: 4 × 6 is 'four more than 20'; 4 × 9 is 'four less than 40'.

Double, then double again. Because 4 = 2 × 2, any number times 4 is just doubled twice: 7 → 14 → 28. Children fluent in doubling pick up the 4s faster than almost any other table.
Around ages 7–8. In England the 3s, 4s and 8s are the Year 3 tables — deliberately grouped because the 4s and 8s can both be derived from doubling.
It must be even, and its half must also be even (because it is double a number in the 2 times table). 36 works (half is 18, still even); 26 does not (half is 13, odd).
