Add the digits of any answer in the 3s and you get 3, 6 or 9: 12 → 1+2 = 3; 27 → 2+7 = 9. This is the divisibility rule for 3, and it lets children check their own answers.

The 2s, 5s and 10s have loud patterns (evens, ending in 5/0, adding a zero). The 3s pattern is subtler — the digit sums cycle 3, 6, 9 — so children rely more on skip-counting and derived facts like 'double plus one more group'.
If a number's digits add to a multiple of 3, the number is divisible by 3. So 24 (2+4=6) is in the 3 times table, and 25 (2+5=7) is not. It works for any size number.
