How to learn the 3 times table

Triple = double plus one more

3 × 7 = double 7 (14) plus one more 7 = 21. Children fluent in their 2s can derive any 3s fact in one extra step until recall takes over.

The digit-sum check

Add the digits of any answer in the 3s and you get 3, 6 or 9: 12 → 1+2 = 3; 27 → 2+7 = 9. This is the divisibility rule for 3, and it lets children check their own answers.

Count in 3s out loud

3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30, 33, 36 has a strong spoken rhythm. Chant it going upstairs, clap on each multiple, or count fingers in threes — rhythm makes the sequence stick.

Why is the 3 times table harder than the 2s and 5s?

The 2s, 5s and 10s have loud patterns (evens, ending in 5/0, adding a zero). The 3s pattern is subtler — the digit sums cycle 3, 6, 9 — so children rely more on skip-counting and derived facts like 'double plus one more group'.

What's the divisibility trick for 3?

If a number's digits add to a multiple of 3, the number is divisible by 3. So 24 (2+4=6) is in the 3 times table, and 25 (2+5=7) is not. It works for any size number.

When do children learn the 3 times table?

Typically at ages 7–8, after the 2s, 5s and 10s. In England it is a Year 3 expectation alongside the 4s and 8s; in the US it lands in 3rd grade when multiplication fluency is the headline goal.
