Odd numbers × 5 end in 5 (3 × 5 = 15); even numbers × 5 end in 0 (4 × 5 = 20). This single rule makes the 5s almost self-checking.
5 is half of 10, so 5 × 8 is half of 10 × 8: half of 80 is 40. For even multipliers this 'halve the tens' route is often faster than skip-counting.
Reading minutes on an analogue clock is counting in 5s: the 7 on the clock means 35 minutes because 7 × 5 = 35. Telling time and the 5 times table reinforce each other daily.

Three reasons: every answer ends in 5 or 0, the skip-counting chant (5, 10, 15, 20…) has a strong rhythm, and children rehearse it constantly in real life — clock faces, tally marks, 5-cent and 5-pence coins.
By ages 6–7. It is one of the first tables taught (with the 2s and 10s) and in England is expected by the end of Year 2.
Because 5 is half of 10, multiply by 10 and halve the result: 5 × 12 → 120 → 60. For even numbers you can halve first (5 × 8 = 10 × 4 = 40), which avoids fractions entirely.
